This is the second time for me to visit this place in GenSan with the S3X Tour Tres ( Soccsksargen EXperience Tour) organizer Avel Manasala of GenSantos.com with the teamed up of Ganda Ever So Much.

The road going up the mountain is an adventure in itself, we have to pass by a lot of cock breeding village before reaching the place. As always we were there very early n the morning and breakfast was served courtesy of the owner Mr. & Mrs. James and Twilight Betonio. Breakfast was a feast and it was really heavy they served vegetable soup, tuna steak, banana blossom salad with coconut milk, fruits and suman.

After our breakfast we headed down to gear ourselves for the adventure we came for which is ziplining. But before our breakfast we got to try their cable car, which is the latest attraction of the park. It was an experience of a lifetime to ride a very bare cable car where you can see the deepest part of the mountain as we cross two mountains, just like a slow motion. A must try ride!

This is the fastest zipline in the area, and if ever you want adventure and fun this is the place to be when in GenSan!

Ride Prices: Zipline – P250; Xtreme Cable Car Ride – P200
And it is the only dining place in the city that offers shabu-shabu.

While I was in GenSan with the S3X Tour Tres ( Soccsksargen EXperience Tour) organizer Avel Manasala of GenSantos.com with the teamed up of Ganda Ever So Much, me and along with the bloggers who participated were lucky enough to taste one of GenSan’s best shabu-shabu.

Not only that, the dishes that was served was exceptional. There were two types of shabu-shabu that was served, the regular and the hot one. I opted for the hot one, OMG it was delectable a must try if you pass by Gensan. And the best of all is their stuffed cookies with shrimp and quail eggs.

Not many people would want to go to an army batallion camp, but that changes everything once you got to visit the37th Infantry Battalion Camp at Barrio Tampuan, Brgy Kamanga, Maasim, Sarangani Province under Batallion Commander Lt Col Adolfo Espuelas Sr.

The camp is civilian friendly and they really take good care of the people in the area. They do not only engage in military activities, they are also engaged in Peace building and community services in the area. Sarangani Province is now one of the peaceful province in Mindanao due to their presence.

During the S3X Tour Tres ( Soccsksargen EXperience Tour) organizer Avel Manasala of GenSantos.com with the teamed up of Ganda Ever So Much, we experienced first hand hospitality from the 37th Infantry Battalion and a tour to their camp that made them special from the rest.
We had a fun time riding their “Tanke de Guerra” around the camp, it was once in a life time experience, they also have a “Flirting Park”, where soldiers can flirt with nature, a “Serenity lounge”, where they spend sometime and have fun and their famous septic tank which they turned into a sight seeing pad to see the whole of Maasin and the Sarangani Bay.

If you are in the area, this is one experience you wouldn’t miss!Charleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15767281474754783763noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617275882896848716.post-48577865442340337052011-12-08T12:37:00.000+08:002011-12-08T12:37:52.835+08:00IML Eco Park, a must visit in Maasim! On the first day of our S3X Tour Tres ( Soccsksargen EXperience Tour) organized by Avel Manasala of GenSantos.com with the teamed up of Orman Manansala we had our lunch at IML ECO PARK, Barangay Lumasal, Maasim, Sarangani Province owned by Mr. Jojo Lopez and Haydee Lopez.
We could see that they are well taken cared of until they are big enough to go back to the vast Sarangani Bay to their freedom.
Meeting a local politician is really one of a kind experience since they are busy with their daily activity running the town. In Maitum we were gladly welcomed by Mayor Elsie Lucille Perrett and she was game enough to have a group picture taken with us and after that a photo op with each of the bloggers present.

Next in agenda is the Maitum Museum visit, which is housed just inside the municipal hall. There we can see the rich culture of Maitum, the rich archaeological find in the area. It is a must visit if ever you are in town and it is highly recommended. And our official tour guide is no other than the Tourism officer of Maitum, Mr. Arlex Narte who gladly gave us the details of the culture and the archaeological find in his hometown.Charleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15767281474754783763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617275882896848716.post-78453438873307597302011-12-08T10:59:00.000+08:002011-12-08T10:59:42.975+08:00Breakfast at Cresilda’s courtesy of the Mayor of Maitum. . . amazing!

SOCCSARGEN’s only seafood restaurant. And true to their name they are the best in seafoods in GenSan. They serve the best quality of crabs, prawns and lobsters. The recipes are delicious and the prices are quite reasonable. The ambiance is really great for families friends and acquaintances.
We are a group of bloggers who went there for the first night of our tour in Soccsargen area and have a good dinner and a chit chat with the owner and with Gov. Migs Dominguez. The food was great the place was so relaxing, a must for seafood lovers.

It is also great to know that Gov. Migs Dominguez is aware of what the bloggers could do to promote the Province.

He is the founder and president of the Center for Asian Culinary Studies.

During his visit here sometime during the Kadayawan Festival he tried and recommended these restaurants/establishments a must visit/eat in Davao City.

Beko’s Biik – located on Guerreros Street, Beko’s offers one of the best lechon de leche in town at an absolutely reasonable price. In fact, I usually take home one lechon to Manila every time I go to Davao. If you are brave enough, you may opt to order the super spicy where a kilo of siling labuyo, garlic, leeks and lemon grass are stuffed into the belly of the suckling pig. I would take this stuffing out – the chilis, garlic, onions, leeks and the tender part of the lemon grass and put them in the blender and make deliciously, devilish sambal. Many of the exam panel and CACS chefs are converts of Beko’s. You might want to be one; call telephone numbers (082) 227 2445 and 286 3445.

Tito’s Durian – Ankol or Tito is the man wearing a white sando cutting the durians every afternoon in his parked van on Torres Street in front of Bistro Rosario. Although he has another store in Magsaysay St., he usually spends a lot of time on this street corner selling his harvests. On peak season, he would have as many as 10 durian varieties from his farm for durian connoisseurs to try. The “King of Durian” will give you sound advice on your taste and texture preference; he will open it and let you sample the durian. If you don’t like it, he will offer you another.

BakBak – Located in the Pryce area near the corner of Torres St., BakBak specializes in ice cold beers and pulutans such as the mini barbeque. A recent discovery while drinking and dining with Helen and Arnie del Rosario was the fried native chicken. Though a little tougher and stringier than the mass-bred chicken, the tastier, smaller chicken with its garlicky lemon grass marinade gives fried chicken a new and native dimension without the usual thick and bready coatings.

Luna’s – This is a well-known, old carinderia puwesto in Agdao Market. I like going here with the chefs for an early morning breakfast. One gets a steamy bowl of bulalo with a whole shank of freshly slaughtered beef, still pink (sign of freshly slaughtered meat) or some balbacua (calf’s foot) soup that is thick and gelatinous. Also worth ordering is their freshly prepared fried chicken marinated in spices and lots of lemon grass.

Gorio’s – This is another panciteria related to Dencia’s operating in front of the San Pedro hospital. Lugao and noodle dishes are worth the try at very reasonable prices. I also fancy the Torta de Cangrejo or crab omelet, a large omelette mound of egg and crab swimming in tasty, medium brown gravy.

Papa Chings – located along Lacson Street or Camuf Street, Papa Chings offers a Davao favorite known as greaseless fried chicken. A 15 to 20 minute wait is de riguer because the chicken is “slow-fried” with a very thin coating which gives it a delicate crisp and less oily crust.

Eugenio R. Gonzalez, popularly known as Chef Gene, is a Filipino Chef, Restauranteur, Educator, Management Consultant, and Author.

He is the founder and president of the Center for Asian Culinary Studies.

Ferrazzini’s – This house is along Bacaca Road and is famous for its Black Paella, a delicious home-cooked version of the dish. The place has built quite a reputation for its recipes. One must reserve beforehand to enjoy a whole garden setup dining experience.

Tai-Pan – This is located at the downtown area where they have three items worth going to. The cheapest lomi which is a giant punch bowl good for six people (about P65); fried crispy pugo, a treat with seasoned salt and black pepper dip and some fresh calamansi squeeze and Kasili (sea eel) that is stewed in tomato sauce. This dish is rich, fatty and melts in the mouth because it is cooked until the eel meat is tender and falls off the bone.

Bulca Chong – Located along Gen. Luna Street, this place is a haunt for an after drinking crowd. The soup is well-simmered and well-flavored and is reputedly cooked with rich and thick carabao meat. Redolent of ginger, chili, lemon grass, leeks, galangal and other condiments, this tasty concoction is created to wake up the inebriated soul. Other variations such as the sizzling and crispy Bulca-Chong are now being offered but the original flavorful soup stew is still worth the trip, with or without alcohol in your blood stream.Charleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15767281474754783763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617275882896848716.post-38202057441068435822011-12-07T18:36:00.001+08:002011-12-07T18:36:45.231+08:00'K Steaks Unlimited' a must for steak lovers in Davao City!K Steak Unlimited will soon be a byword in Davao City! “K Steak Unlimited : We Serve Steaks and Yes, They’re Unlimited!” is really true to its name!

The newest addition to a dining experience in Davao City, located at Loreto cor. Macopa Street, Juna Subd, just a few meters before St. Paul Church. The place is owned and managed by classmates and best friends Kevin Nifras, Jose Tabbada, and Beda Matayabas,K Steak Unlimited is Davao’s first steak buffet restaurant and the place can accommodate up to 50 people at one time.

I was one of the lucky member of Davao Bloggers that was invited to be one of the first to try their unlimited steak meal. Awesome really, an unlimited steak of pork, beef and cream dory. This includes the buffet of pork and beans, beef caldereta, fresh lumpia, fried lumpia, creamy spaghetti, caesar salad and even fruit desserts.

The steaks are grilled in front of your very eyes and you can get it fresh off the grill. The pork steak is really yummy and soft just rightly marinated, the beef steak you can have it your way rare, medium rare, or well done and the cream dowry is refreshing to the palate (a must try).

If you have a big appetite for meats, then this is the place to be. The buffet alone is satiating enough but the steaks are totally great!!

K Steak Unlimited, a business venture under the Katigayunan Food Corporation, the restaurant is now officially open as of July 20. They serve buffet lunch (11 AM to 2 PM) and dinner (5 PM to 10 PM) for only Php 170 pesos per head.

I first saw Verikai’s ad on the internet last year that they are coming over to Manila for a limited time only. I decided then to see the show. I booked a seat for July 26 matinee showing and my plane ticket has to be booked next. Boy, I was so excited to hear the good news and back then I can’t wait for the day to come.
Lat Sunday was a very long and exciting day for me since I have to wake up as early as four in the morning to catch my six thirty morning flight to Manila. I arrived around eight in the morning the matinee showing of Verekai is still at one in the afternoon and gates starts to open at twelve.

That was such a long wait, I just wasted my time going to some stores in Baclarabn, then to Robinson Place, Ermita had my brunch over there and just killing time before going to the circus.

As I arrived at the venue I was awed by the magnificence of the Grand Chaiteau, a tent which stands 66 feet high, can accommodate more than 2,600 people. The tent which has been erected at the Quirino Grandstand by more than 80 people, it looks amazing.

Inside the big tent was two snack bars where you can purchase your giant popcorn and choice of drinks. In the center lies the souvenir shop where you can get t-shirts, souvenir items at sale and their souvenir program is up for sale at P500.00 a piece(very pricey indeed).

Verikai is a Romanian word which means Wherever in English language, it feature 13 jaw-dropping acts to be performed by the 130-strong Cirque du Soleil which includes 55 artists from all over the world.
Written and directed by Dominique Champagne, the circus act tells the story of a gypsy who falls in love with the creatures of “Varekai.”

It was a thrill of a life time as the show starts, their amazing performances, out of this world costume and their acrobatic feats is just extra ordinary. The stage, lights and special effects just made magic out of the performances, the tree kids from China with their act was just wonderful. The finale was breath taking as the acrobats takes turn in a breath taking acrobatic feat one after another.

Baluarte is an interactive wildlife sanctuary and facility, with the breathtaking view of its dominating scenic boulders amidst trees and greens. It is owned by no less than Ilocos Sur Governor Chavit Singson. Entering the animal sanctuary is free of charge it is just a few minutes away from the town proper.

To get there, it is either you rent a horse driven carriage(Calesa) or hire a tricycle going there.

The facility is especially a big crowd drawer for family outing, activities such as animal feeding, petting, riding the “tiburin”, a small horse-drawn carriage, and visiting our Butterfly Garden will surely be an extraordinary adventure for family.

The place was already featured in national television, Indeed the place is really huge and it is surrounded by trees. The most prominent structure is the huge golden building which can be seen from afar. On top of the building is the famous golden tree which the Chinese usually have as a symbol of prosperity to come inside the house. As you go inside the sanctuary the next prominent structure is the giant dinosaur.

Ostriches, deers are roaming around freely on the grounds, the small ponies, ducks are caged and can be feed during heir feeding time.

Visiting the place is worth your while, I was there too early and they said that more visitors are there during weekends and in the afternoon!Charleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15767281474754783763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617275882896848716.post-82942552679813570082011-12-07T18:24:00.000+08:002011-12-07T18:24:19.761+08:00The best Halo-halo up North is San Fernando, La Union’s Halo-halo de Iloko!Looking for a special place to get your cravings for Halo-halo took me up North in San Fenando, La Union!

I was passing by La Union going to Vigan, Ilocos Sur to see the old city that was still preserved. I asked some people on the bus going there if there are anything sort of good food or dessert to taste in the region which is not the traditional food from the region. I got an answer and they say that I should pass by San Fernando, La Union and taste their Halo-halo there at “Halo-halo de Iloko“.
I did and I was not disappointed at all. The place is easy to look for, just ask any tricycle driver and they will surely bring you to “Halo-Halo de Iloko“! The place looks so small from the outside and once you go in you can see that the place has its own character. As I arrived in the place around past 2 in the afternoon, there were only one table that was occupied. I ordered and wow tha Halo-halo was tempting. The taste was awesome and it took me 5 minutes to eat it all.

I live just a few kilometers away and this is the first time that I have ever seen a colony of bats that numbered up to 1.8 million in just one colony. There are a lot of caves in and around the Island of Samal. But only this cave is inhabited by bats as what the local people said.

The cave is inside a private lot owned by Iñigo-Monfort family and was named after the owner Norma Monfort. The cave was once used by Filipinos during the World War 2 as a hiding place and protection of against aerial bombing. No one knows why bats now inhabits the cave.

The place is open from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily!

You can now view the bat cave from the outside. No one is allowed to enter the cave because the bats are nocturnal in nature and they sleep in the morning and thus will be bothered by the noise that they will make when they are allowed inside the cave. Once they are startled by the noise they will fly and some bats are carrying their babies in their armpits. Once they fly their babies will fall and their population will decrease.

From the entrance of the caves as there are around three entrances, we can see the bats by the hundreds of thousands and just by seeing them is an experience in itself. It ‘s a must see Samal Island tour experience you shouldn’t miss.

Getting there is easy, you can take a bus going to Samal Island from Sta. Ana Port area and upon arriving on the island you can take a ‘Habal-habal’(motorbike) going there.
If you don’t have anything to do this summer or just want to have a simple get away from the city, this is the place to be. A day would suffice, but if you want to unwind and relax than they also have a cozy room for an overnight stay and it is not very expensive at all with a bath and air conditioned rooms available. They also have dorm type accommodation that can cater to a group with separate rooms for males and females and function room for seminars, events and weddings.

In the middle of the resort lies a small lagoon, and if you want you can go fishing. If you want to relax just go to the beach and if that is not enough. You can proceed to the island just off the coast of the resort. The famous Vanishing Island, the name speaks for itself as the island vanishes when the tide i high and can be seen again when the tide is low.
RIVER CRUISE at Tancuan River and Balingaon River
Last April 10, 2011 I took part of “TAGUM CITY: Beyond Your Usual City Tour” organized by Olan Fernandez Emboscado of The Travel Teller. At first I was hesitant to take part of the tour since Tagum City is just an hour drive from Davao City and I thought that a day tour will just be like visiting any small city with just few things to do for a day tour.

Banana Beach (Madaum, Tagum)
I changed my mind as I saw the days itinerary of the tour. Wow, Tagum City is not just any other small city where they only boast of their becoming a city with the revenues that they get from its constituents, that made them a city. Well I was wrong, they have really made a lot of efforts that the people of Tagum can be proud of. The local government with the leadership of their Mayor Rey T. Uy is making leaps and bounds to promote their city as the next tourist destination in the Davao Region.

Hijo Estate Forest and elevated canopy walkway
Our jump off point is in Davao City where we rode a jeepney to Tagum City which is an hour drive away. We first visited the Mangrove Park in the Tancuan creek which is locally known as the Bingcungan River. And it is where we started our boat ride to the river which goes all the way to Davao Gulf, a 8.7 km. boat ride. Along the way we can see the mangrove planted along the river banks and some fishing village along the way and we can see that they are doing their daily routines of the day tending their fish cages.
We then proceed to the famous Banana Beach, the only beach situated inside a banana plantation and surrounded with coconut trees which is part of the Hijo Resource Palntation. A forest tour is a must with a canopy walk inside the forest where we saw some wild monkeys roaming aroune and they say in some days you can see wild boars, snakes and monitor lizards roaming around the wild.

Lunch at Secret Garden Restaurant
We had our lunch at the famous Secret Garden Restaurant in Tagum City. It is a restaurant situated inside a garden. You can dine there under the roof or al fresco. The lunch was included in our tour we had breaded fish filet, chicken adobo with vegetable on the side. It was delicious and filling with never ending iced tea.

Church, Shrines and La Filipina Cemetery
After lunch we went to Church of Christ the Eucharistic King, Christ the King Cathedral, Giant Rosary,Regina Rosary
and Mary Wood’s Shrine (Magdum, Tagum). It was really great since it is the weekend before the Holy Week and we had our early Visita Iglesia. And the famous La Filipina Public Cemetery.

Tagum City Hall and Night Market
We visited the great structure in Tagum City which is the Tagum City Hall. It is a huge edifice that Tagum City can be proud of when the city hall will be finished, targeted at the end of this year. They have an open stage on the right side where events of the city will be held. We cap the tour with a dinner at their famous Night Market and luckily we saw Mayor Rey T. Uy after dinner and had a small talk with the tour group. And he is very proud of the night market as it is one of the most profitable money making project that the city has which contributed a big chunk in the city’s coffer which runs into millions.

Indeed it “TAGUM CITY: Beyond Your Usual City Tour” an experience you must make!Charleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15767281474754783763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617275882896848716.post-44392956686277746492011-12-07T17:57:00.001+08:002011-12-07T17:57:50.220+08:00T'daan Kini Falls, the lesser known falls in Lake Sebu!T’daan Kini Falls is located Barangay Lamlahak, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato. It is the lesser known falls in Lake Sebu area and it is around 45 minutes walk from Sitio Talibuk with nice scenes along the way.

T’daan in the local language (T’boli) means “cold and hot water.Once reaching the falls all your tiredness from walking will all disappear. The fall at the moment can be reached by foot, but once the bridge linking the road getting there will just be a 15 minute walk. Along the road is small community of T’boli tribe which make wood carving as a souvenir items that are being sold. It is one means of livelihood for the tribe in the area. Abaca is abundant in the are thus abaka fibers are being cultivated and processed as a means of livelihood of the common folks in the area.

We passed by two small streams in going to T’daan Falls. This I may say makes our journey a lot more exciting. Upon reaching T’daan Kini Falls, it is a sight to behold, the water is very cold and the place is ideal for picnic and swimming as a means of rejuvenation from the long walks that people does in getting there.
We had our lunch courtesy of Lake Sebu Tourism Board. It was a very filling lunch with fried tilapia which is abundant in the area and adobong manok. We really enjoyed eating our lunch with the use of our hands. It was a long time ago that I used my hands while eating and in sync with nature at that. We just sat where we feel comfortable and ate our lunch. The experience is priceless!
As part of the SoCSarGen Experience Tour: Part Deux which was organized by Avel Manasala of theGenSan News Online Mag, I was one of the lucky ones who got to try their zipline as one of the first patrons. But the first thing that we were made to do in an early morning Yoga hosted by Fifth Mountain Zipline Adventure Park and then a sumptous breakwast was then served.
Local cuisine was served, and the breakfast was really heavy on the tummy. Tuna steak, bunch of vegetable salad like okra, camote tops, ampalaya with singkamas and diced fresh pineapple. One of the main dish is Nilagpang na Manok, a first for me.
We are one of the lucky visitors of the Dole Philippines Plant , since they invited us to their exclusive Kalsangi Restaurant and Club, where only the top executives and employees of the plant are allowed there.

Dole Philippines is one of the largest pineapple plantation in the world and it contributes a lot to the economy and the people living in the area. They export around 80% of their production and the rest are sold locally.
The company does a lot more than just that, they are also doing a lot of corporate social responsibility to its community. They advocate tree planting in the surrounding community and in return they give classroom arm chairs and help farmers have their own pineapple farm.

They also hosted a merienda for all who participated the event. Of course pineapple is present on the menu. Nothing taste like the sweetest pineapple by Dole, accompanied by their famous Clubhouse sandwich, Pancit Palabok from their restaurant and their famous Dole fruit juices.Charleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15767281474754783763noreply@blogger.com0
